Sovereign Lake NORAM Report

Sovereign Lake NORAM FIS races, December 11-12

Report from National Team athlete Chris Darlington:

Over in North America there are a bunch of Aussie crew getting stuck into some training and racing. Some of them went to Sovereign Lake for the NORAM event last weekend. Saturday was a classic sprint and Sunday was a distance skate.

Both days saw the following people race; myself, Paul Kovacs, Phil Bellingham, Siobhan Jones and also Sarah Slattery from the NSW squad. The full results can be found at http://www.zone4.ca/results.asp?id=3242 or on the FIS web page.

The results were quite mixed with some reasonably strong performances. I was happy to be racing faster than at the Alberta Cup in Canmore the weekend prior. My sprint form seems to have improved significantly on previous years, as I was only half a second off qualifying for the senior men’s sprint finals.

Sunday’s race was quite a hard slog, as it snowed a foot the night prior and it was definitely the sort of conditions where conservative pacing was the key to success.

Paul and Phil are now back in the USA. Siobhan, Sarah and I are now back  in Canmore. It was an epic road trip home to Canmore, there were multiple truck crashes in the mountains and it took 9 hours to get home.

Later this week I’m super psyched to travel back to BC  to compete in a 3-day mini tour NORAM in Rossland. Day 1 is a sprint, day 2 is an individual skate race and day 3 is a distance pursuit based on the overall time. The first across the line on day 3 is the overall winner.
