2011 Dolomitenlauf

Dolomitenlauf  22-23 January

The Dolomitenlauf, third event of the 2010 / 2011 Worldloppet series, was held last weekend on the tracks at Obertilliach, near Lienz in Austria.  Sixteen Australians took part including members of the National Team and the NSW Junior Teams, together with citizen skiers including triple Worldloppet Masters Marg Hayes and Bruce Wharrie.

Fabio Santus of the Italian Marathon Cup Team took first place in the FIS Marathon Cup 42km F event, extending his grip on the lead of the FIS Marathon Cup ahead of fellow team member Simone Paredi and Norwegian Anders Aukland from Team Xtra Personell. Sarah Hansson of Team United Bakeries leads the women’s Marathon Cup standings, one point ahead of Susanne Nystrom from Team Exspirit with Seraina Mischol of the Engadine Skimarathon Team moving up into third place after this week’s win in the Dolomitenlauf.

Belinda Phiilips and Georgia Merrit finished in 15th and 19th places in the 42km Dolomitenlauf main event, with some nice results from the Juniors in the 25km event.  Phillip Bellingham was the fastest U20 skier in 9th place with Hamish Roberts and Lachlan Porter in 40th and 44th place respectively.  In the women’s 25km Gabriella Cigana just missed the podium to finish in 4th place and first U20 woman. Phillip Bellingham had a big three days, starting in the Dolomitensprint in the centre of Lienz on the Friday, and following up on Saturday with 9th (and second U20) in the 20km Dolomitenclassic.
