Oslo 2011: Update #4 – Pursuits

The last two days in Oslo have seen the women’s 15km Pursuit and men’s 30km Pursuit. Though in the women’s race the fog was so thick the athletes were only spotted now and then. Esther Bottomley was 52nd in the 15km out of relatively small field of 56 starters. In the 30km Ben Sim was the only Australian to avoid being overlapped, finishing 62nd out of a field of 83. Oslo 2011: Update #3 – Sprint

Today was the first medal event at the 2011 World Championship. Esther Bottomley finished 44th in the Freestyle Sprint,¬† arguably Australia’s best ever result by a female cross country skier at a World Championship. The Australian men had mixed results with Ben Sim, Mark van der Ploeg, Nick Grimmer and Chris Darlington finishing 63rd, 70th, 71st and 93rd out of the field of 122 starters.

Oslo 2011 Update #2 – 4th, 6th, 11th, 15th

The opening day of competition at the 2011 World Championship and the Australian men finished in 4th, 6th, 11th and 15th. If only it was a championship event and not the 10km Classic Qualification race! The guys raced well, Mark van der Ploeg and Ewan Watson made it into the top 10 and qualified through to the 15km next Tuesday.

Oslo 2011 Update#1 Qualification Race Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the opening event of the 2011 World Championship in Oslo. Australia has four men competing in the 10km Classic Qualification race – Chris Darlington, Ewan Watson, Mark van der Ploeg and Nick Grimmer. There are 48 starters and our boys are seeded 7th, 12th, 14th, and 19th. The top 10 finishers tomorrow are eligible to start in the 15km Classic next week.

Worldloppet double weekend – France & Japan

The weekend of 12/13 February was the first of three Worldloppet weekends with one race in Europe and one somewhere else.  This weekend was La Transjurassienne in France, held on a modified 40km course, and 50km Sapporo Ski Marathon. Continue reading

Spar Cup Beitostolen – 10/15km Race Report

Ben Sim and Lescinska Grimmer  both finished 20th in todays 10/15km skate event. Nick Grimmer and Belinda Phillips also raced whilst the other Australians went for an easy classic ski.
