Marcialonga .. 30.01.2011

Only four Australians feature in the results of this year’s Marcialonga – possibly due in no small part to the fact that entries reached the limit of 7200 back in September.  While we have been used to the Vasaloppet reaching it’s 15000 limit for some years now, this year sees a total of six northern hemisphere Worldloppet events closing entries in their main race early with record entry levels.

Marg Hayes, Bruce Wharrie and Malcom McKinnon backed up last week’s 50km at the Dolomitenlauf with a 70km classic ski at the Marcialonga, joined in the results list by Robert Maddison, an ex pat Australian who has lived in Sweden for many decades. A quick look through the results link on the Worldloppet website tells us that Robert holds some sort of record for Australian participation with six Marcialongas and eight Vasaloppets to his credit since 2002 when Worldoppet’s website records start. A visit to the Vasaloppet website adds another four Vasaloppets in 1998 – 2001 to make up a nice round dozen.

Winners of the Marcialonga were Jerry Ahrlin (SWE) and Seraina Boner (SUI), both of whom set new records for the 70km course in classic technique.  For Ahrlin it was his third Marcialonga title, while Boner becomes the first Swiss winner of the event.

Next week’s Worldloppet action moves back across the Alps to Oberammergau in Bavaria with another double header, free technique on Saturday and the main event in classic technique on Sunday.
