Oslo 2011 Update#1 Qualification Race Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the opening event of the 2011 World Championship in Oslo. Australia has four men competing in the 10km Classic Qualification race – Chris Darlington, Ewan Watson, Mark van der Ploeg and Nick Grimmer. There are 48 starters and our boys are seeded 7th, 12th, 14th, and 19th. The top 10 finishers tomorrow are eligible to start in the 15km Classic next week.

The two other Australian guys Ben Sim and Callum Watson qualified directly to the 15km, so even if all four in the qualification race make it into the top 10 only two of them will be able start the 15km. All four are capable of making the top 10 if they race well, however most of the rest of the field are probably thinking the same thing.

Esther Bottomley opted not to start the Women’s 5km Classic Qualification because her main event the Sprint is on the following day. If she had been entered she would have been seeded #1, as her FIS ranking is only just outside the direct qualification standard of 120 points.

Hopefully tomorrow we have good news to report.
