Worldloppet double weekend #3 – Finland & USA

Oskar Svard (left) wins Finlandia from Stanislav Rezac

Memo to Stanislac Rezac: Watch out for Swedes in photo finshes.  First it was Jerry Ahrlin in the Konig Ludwig Lauf, and this weekend at the Finlandia hiihto in Lahti it was Oskar Svard who held off a challenge from Stanislav to take the top spot on the podium. Third was Bjorn Lind (SWE) while Fabio Santus in fourth place took enough points to move him back to the top of the FIS Marathon Cup rankings. Sandra Hansson (SWE) took the top place on the women’s podium and is now over 100 points ahead of the opposition in the Women’s FIS Marathon Cup rankings.  While Sturt Ison was the only  Aussie to step up to the start for the 50km classic main race in Finland, we had five starters in the 50km free technique. Ronice Goebel, Merv Trease, Sue Waller, Paul Waller, together with Malcolm McKinnon who has now taken part in all European Worldloppet events held so far this season.

Across the Atlantic Marg Hayes was the sole Australian in the 50km free technique American Birkebeiner, with Nancy Robinson competing in the 23km classic event. Top three in the men’s event were Tore Martin Gundersen (NOR), Benoit Chauvet (FRA) and Andrey Tyuterev (RUS).  The women’s event saw US skiers taking all podium places. Caitlin Compton was first, followed by Morgan Smith and Evelyn Dong, who was the winner of the Hoppet in 2008.

Next weekend is the biggest Worldloppet race of them all, the 90km Vasaloppet in Sweden, but there is also the 21km Frauenlauf for women taking place in the Engadin Valley in Switzerland, and the 50km Bieg Piastow in Poland .. with Aussies starting in all of them.
