National Rollerski Event April 23

After a break of many years rollerski events are set to be held in Australia again. On Saturday April 23 Ski & Snowboard Australia is putting on two events in Canberra – the Mt Stromlo Hill Climb and the CIT Criterium.

Rollerski events are growing in Europe and FIS endorses both Rollerski World Cup and Rollerski World Championship events. Back in the 1980’s Australian and state championships were held, but in the last 10 years the only rollerski races in Australia have been the Jindabyne Winter Sports Academy rollerski series around 2001-2003 and the Lake Mountain Challenge back in 2004. State and national team members have run informal time trials around Mt Beauty and Jindabyne but no official races have been held.

The Mt Stromlo Hill Climb will be run in classic technique and in mass start format. The all uphill course is about 3.3km long, starting at the base of the Mt Stromlo Road and finishing outside the Scope Mt Stromlo Cafe.

The CIT Criterium will be held in freestyle technique on a twisting loop in the car park of the Canberra Institute of Technology in Bruce. Some former National Team  and ACT Junior Team members will recall the course used by ACT coaches Tim Greville and Pip Daley for time trials and pacing sessions.

Participants can enter on the day.  The races are  part of National Junior Team and NSW Junior Team training camps and some senior team members will also be competing. As a trial event for reintroducing Australian Championship events entry is free for state and national team members, and only 5$ for all others.

Event Schedule – Saturday April 23

10:00 am – 3.3km Uphill Classic Time Trial – Mt Stromlo Road
2:00 pm – Freestyle Criterium – Canberra Institute of Technology, Bruce
