Lake Mountain Sprint X Race Report

Nick Grimmer heading into the first jump during the Time Trail of the Lake Mountain Sprint X

Nick Grimmer and Esther Bottomley won the first race of the season this last weekend at Lake Mountain. Both athletes are members of the Australian Ski Team and both raced at the 2011 World Championships in Oslo, Norway.

The event was a Sprint-X, a popular variation on the typical sprint event which involves steep downs, sharp banked corners, a drop off and a jump over a 500m course. 51 competitors competed making the event a huge success.

Nick Grimmer won the time trail in one minute and ten seconds. Former Australian Team skier Andrew Mock was the second fastest in qualifying three seconds back. Others with fast qualifying times included Kevin Tory from Melbourne, past Australian Team members Mark Raymond and Andrew Paul and Lake Mountain skier Matt De Freitas.

After the time trail the top 16 qualifiers competed in a knockout competition. The nature of the technical short course saw some major upsets with Mark Raymond crashing out in the quarter finals and third ranked Kevin Tory crashing out in the semis. Second qualified Andrew Mock was lucky to get into the final after crashing twice in his semi but was able to fight back and out lunge Jeff Vietz and get through to the final. The final was close, however Grimmer who had been strong all day was able to lead from the start and hold a small break over Mock around the course and take the victory. Mock was second, De Freitas third and two times Olympian Andrew Paul was forth.

In the female event Esther Bottomley qualified fastest in a time of one minute and fifteen seconds, the fourth fastest time of the day when mixed in with the guys. Lescinska Grimmer was the second fastest in the qualification, Mary Hall from Buxton was third and former Olympian Sandra Paul was forth. In the finals there were no real surprises, Esther and Lescinska both easily won their semi final with Mary and Sandra both progressing through. In the final Esther took the lead at the start and held a comfortable margin over Lescinska until the finish. Mary and Sandra were closer with Mary coming out of the start only slightly in front of Sandra an advantage she took to the finish to claim third.

In the junior category Alisdiar Tutt who is living at Bogong village won the boys events and Casey Wright from the Yarra Valley won the girls. Both these athletes are successful members of the Victorian Junior Squad and spent the last summer training at Royal Gorge. Tutt was lucky after falling in the qualifying and again in the semi but was able to make the final and hold off the up and coming junior racer Alex Gibson. Katerina Paul was second in the junior girls making it a very successful day for the Paul family. Dylan Harmer was third in the junior boys and Elle Hesse was third in the junior girls.

All up it was a very successful day for both the competitors and the spectators. Lake Mountain did a superb job with the course and the organization of the event.
