Farewell Ross Martin

The Australian cross country skiing community will miss one of the characters of the sport this winter. Winter Olympian Ross Martin passed away on July 2 at the Royal North Shore Hospital, after sustaining serious injuries in a cycling accident a week earlier.

Ross represented Australia in cross country skiing at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. He was Australian 15km Champion eight times between 1967 and 1976, and continued as a regular competitor in cross country skiing races all his life. He was also a keen cyclist and was participating in a cycling event near Newcastle at the time of the accident.

A regular contributor to the recent cross country skiing national team fundraising projects XC Towards 2010 and Towards 2014, Ross always took the time to encourage new athletes coming through. It wasn’t uncommon for national team skiers who had never met him to receive an email of support from Ross when they made the Australian team for major international events for the first time.

His entertaining emails, his presence at ski events and his post race speeches will be missed.

Ross Martin’s funeral was held earlier this week in Sydney.
