2011 Kangaroo Hoppet Report

Australia’s international ski marathon the Kangaroo Hoppet was held on Saturday August 27 at Falls Creek in north-east Victoria. The first skier across the line in the premier 30km Freestyle event was Petr Novak from the Czech Republic, making it the third time in the event’s 21 year history that a Czech skier has won. Double Australian Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley was the first woman home in the 30km, making it back-to-back Hoppet victories for the home-grown Mt Beauty skier. Continue reading

Australian 2.5km/5km/10km Classic Championship

The classic distance races of the 2011 Australian Championship series were held yesterday Sunday August 21 at Perisher. The Open Women 5km Classic was won by Esther Bottomley 35 seconds ahead of Aimee Watson. The Open Men 10km Classic was won by Ben Sim 32 seconds ahead of Alex Almoukov. Lucy Glanville took the U20 Women 5km Classic title, finishing 3rd overall in the Open event, with Phillip Bellingham winning the U20 Men 10km event in 5th overall. Xanthea Dewez won the 5km U16 class, while only 7 seconds separated Damon Morton from Hamish Roberts in the U16 10km event. In the 2.5km events Matt Bull won the MU14, Sabrina Howell won the WU14, Jacob Stevens won the MU12, and Nelle Forster-Berghuis won the WU12.

Australian Open/Junior Sprint Freestyle Championship Results

The 2011 Australian Sprint Freestyle Championships were held at Perisher on Saturday August 20. The Open Women A-Final was won by Esther Bottomley ahead of the U20 Champion Anna Trnka, with 3rd place going to another junior Siobhan Jones. Callum Watson won the Open Men A-Final  ahead of Ben Sim and Phillip Bellingham the U20 Champion. Continue reading

Snowy Mountains Classic & Australian 15/30km Championship

The Australian 15 / 30 km Championships were held this Saturday in Perisher in conjunction with the Snowy Mountains Classic. Perfect weather and super fast conditions made for an excellent day. Ben Sim won the men’s 30km Freestyle just 5 seconds ahead of Chris Darlington. The women’s 15 km Freestyle was taken out by Aimee Watson, followed by Sarah Slattery and d’Arcy Baxter. Victorian Junior Championship Results

The 2011 Victorian Junior Championships for cross country skiing were held at Falls Creek this weekend. There were freestyle sprints on Saturday and distance classic races on Sunday. Full results are available in PDF via the links below, possibly some images will be posted later on.

NZ Winter Games Race Day 1

The 2011 New Zealand Winter Games cross country events commenced today at the Snow Farm. Australian Team members Callum Watson and Phillip Bellingham raced the 15km Classic mass start up against a strong field of USA and Canadian athletes. Today’s race was the 15km mass start. There is an extremely competitive field here this year with World Cup Teams from Canada (including Oslo World Champs Alex Harvey and Devon Kershaw), USA, Russia (including 2 Olympic Medallists), Korea, and Japan. Continue reading
