XC World Cup Debut for Alex Almoukov

The 2011-2012 World Cup season kicked off on the weekend and Alex Almoukov made his cross country World Cup debut in Sjusjoen in Norway. Alex finished in 90th place, 14.2% behind the winner in  the 15km Freestyle, a solid result in his first hitout against the world’s best cross country skiers. Read on below for Alex’s race report.

Altitude Training Seminar at Falls Creek

On December 2-3 Falls Creek will host a sport seminar featuring a number of Australia’s leading experts on altitude training. The presenters include physiologists from the Australian Institute of Sport, the NSW Institute of Sport and Victoria University, and coaches from triathlon, cross country skiing, and running legends Steve Moneghetti and Nic Bideau.

Sport Development Officer – Expressions of Interest

The Ski & Snowboard Australia Cross Country Committee (SAXC) is seeking expressions of interest for a Sport Development Officer. The position will be part-time between December 2011 and June 2012 and will involve a range ofdevelopment projects to be completed within this time frame.  Some projects will involve cooperation with the Cross Country Skiing National Team Coach and SSA’s National Pathway Coordinator.

The responsibilities for the Sport Development Officer will include updating coaching and officials courses, policy development, organising training seminars, developing resources for the athlete and coach pathways, publication of a competition handbook, applying for grants and the development of regional training centres. The Sport Development Officer should have a sound knowledge of cross country skiing and the Australian sporting system, have good written and oral communication skills, be able to work independently and be able to complete projects in a timely and efficient manner.

2011 National Rankings

National Rankings for 2011 have just been released:

The national rankings are calculated from the percentage behind the winner in designated selection races throughout the Australian winter. The average of the best two results have been used.

Esther Bottomley topped the Open Women’s rankings for sprint and distance. Ben Sim took the Open Men’s #1 ranking for sprint, however was just pipped by Alex Almoukov for the #1 distance spot by 0.04%. In the Junior category Phillip Bellingham and Lucy Glanville scored the #1 ranking for both sprint and distance.
