Lake Mountain Sprint X Results & Pics

The 2012 Australian cross country racing season opened yesterday with the Sprint X event at Lake Mountain. The big guns came out for the day, with 2010 Winter Olympians Esther Bottomley and Paul Murray winning the open finals. There was lots of close racing and plenty of brave sprinters willing to risk it all on the ‘big’ jump (see below). The closest race was in the junior girls with a very tight battle between Casey Wright and Katerina Paul, with Katerina winning after making a sharp tactical choice in the closing stages.

The objective of race organisers was to provide a fun but challenging early season race that is interesting to watch, using artificial snow to show that the season starts with or without natural snow. They hope to expand the event next season and make it a ‘must do’ event on the calendar to either watch or ski in.

The next events at Lake Mountain are the Mini-series on the 15th of July, including the first ever Junior Sprint X, and the Bullfight charge on the 29th of July.

See the Lake Mountain website for more images from the event.
