The World Cup circuit resumes this weekend after a two week break, with the first international races on the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic tracks in Russia. The cross country venue is at the small alpine resort of Laura, up above the town of Krasnaya Polyana. Four Australians are here to compete; Esther Bottomley, Callum Watson, Mark van der Ploeg, and Phillip Bellingham. The first race here will be a Freestyle Sprint on Friday. Below are a few images from the sprint course yesterday.

Europe and Liberec World Cup

Phillip Bellingham Aussie XC Skier

Since the Canmore World Cup there has been a fair few going’s on taking place. I stayed on in Canmore for another 10 or so days training over the Xmas period which was extremely uneventful but good to have some time to do a few well needed loads of washing!

Flying into Europe I met up with Georgia and Vandy with high spirits although our high spirits soon turned into a little bit of a depression session as we found there was no snow pretty much anywhere in Europe and it then continued to be overcast and raining for the next two weeks straight.

To stop ourselves going insane Georgia and I found ourselves doing quite a bit of OP-Shopping, finding ourselves ferreting around in some rundown Czech bunkers trying to find some luscious get ups, sometimes unsuccessful…

US Nationals and a New PB!

Callum Watson

The first major part of the 2012/2013 race season has come to an end with the last races being the US National Championships. After quite a tough training block over the Christmas period back in Tahoe, we travelled to Soldier Hollow in Utah on New Years Eve. With an endless of supply of fireworks to be bought as we drove through Nevada, we did our best to light up the town of Midway to create some entertainment!

It was always the plan to train hard over Christmas and possibly not be fully rested for the start of these championships and from the results of both the Classic Sprint and 15km Skate, I’d say this was definitely the case. I felt flat for those first two races with very little spark – an obvious result of fatigue still in the system. Everything was scaled back drastically to try and get me…

Oberwiesenthal Race Reports by Nick M and Anna T

Oberwiesenthal OPA Cup Race Report by Nick M

After a week of training which for some was very difficult and was part of a larger buildup to the World Junior Championships (WJCs) and for others involved tapering off to target these races, we decamped from Klingenthal, Eastern Germany and moved to nearby Oberwiesenthal for a successful long weekend of racing. America done, Europe here we come!

Paul Kovacs. Elite Cross-Country Skier

So chapter 1 of this huge six-month trip is now over and done with. We have just finished up with US Nationals in Soldiers Hollow, Utah. To describe the last 10 days as a roller coaster would be an understatement! We arrived into Utah with a bang on New Year’s Eve and had a very fun evening setting off fireworks with the Far West ski team! There is a certain danger when you’re driving past firework factories and you know you have a great excuse to go wild for a night. Surprisingly no one suffered any burns or rockets to the face.

The next day, still buzzing from last night’s fireworks we headed to the trails and did our race prep for the classic 1.3km sprint. Warming up I was feeling great and my skis were rockets so I was really keen to throw down for the event. It’s my…
