Appointment of National Team Coaches

The Ski & Snowboard Australia Cross Country Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of the following positions with the Cross Country Skiing National Team for the 2013/2014 International Program:

World Cup Coach: August Teague

The World Cup Coach is primarily responsible for preparing athletes for competition at World Cup level and at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

2014 World Junior Championship Coach: Nick Grimmer

The World Junior Championship Coach is primarily responsible for coaching the Australian Junior Team in the lead-up to and at the 2014 World Junior / U23 Championships in Val di Fiemme in Italy.

2013 World University Winter Games Coach: Ewan Watson

The WUWG Cross Country Skiing Coach is primarily responsible for preparing athletes for and supporting athletes at the 2013 World University Winter Games in Val di Fiemme in Italy in December 2013.

Additional support positions within the team may be announced as more details of the 2013/2014 International Program are determined over the coming months.

“I’m very happy with the coaching team that we’re putting together for the coming season,” said Finn Marsland, SSA’s Cross Country Skiing Head Coach and High Performance Manager. “Leading into Torino and Vancouver our focus was on the Olympic athletes and we struggled to properly support the rest of the team. We’re in a great position now to have August leading the World Cup Team athletes and other Sochi hopefuls, while other dedicated coaches will be able to work with the next group of athletes coming through.”

From Truckee in the USA, August Teague starting working with the Australian Team at the Falls Creek National Team Training Centre in 2012. Back again for the 2013 Australian Winter, August now has the responsibility for writing the training plans of all the World Cup Team athletes and getting them in the best possible shape for Sochi. He is also working with other members of the team primarily with technique.

Former National Team athlete Nick Grimmer returned to Australia in 2012 after spending a year coaching in Fairbanks, Alaska, then earlier this year coached the Australian Team at the 2013 World Junior Championship. The personal coach of a number of Junior Team athletes, Nick will lead the Australian Junior Team to Europe at the end of the year.

Also a former National Team athlete, Ewan Watson will be the newest member of the Australian Team coaching staff. Ewan retired from international racing in 2012 and has already been coaching with both the NSW and Victorian Junior Squads. Over the 2013 summer he travelled to with the Victorian Junior Squad to Lake Tahoe and coached under the tutelage of Victorian Junior Coach J-C Legras.

The Australian Team is currently in the middle of training camps at Falls Creek, where 60 centimetres of snow has fallen in the last week and over 30km of tracks are groomed.
