This Weekend: 12 Australians, 9 races, 4 countries.

A Scandinavian Cup on the World Championships trails in Sweden, an OPA Cup in Germany, the conclusion of US Nationals in Michigan and a World Loppet in the Czech Republic. These are the events that athletes from the Australian XC Ski Team will be competing in this weekend.

Phil Bellingham, fresh off the plane from Switzerland will be joined by fellow World Cup athlete Callum Watson for the Scandinavian Cup races in Falun, Sweden. The courses used for these races will be the same as those used for the World Championships which will begin on the 18th February. The dates and races for the Scandinavian Cup are as follows:

Friday 9th January – 10/15km Freestyle individual start

Saturday 10th January – Classic Sprint

Sunday 11th January – 15/30km Skiathlon

Further south in Oberwiesenthal Germany Nick Montgomery and Jackson Bursill will be joined by Aimee Watson and Anna Trnka in the Germany leg of the OPA Cup. Many of the Middle European nations will use this event to pick their teams for World Junior, World U23 and World Championships making the event very competitive. The dates and races of this event are:

Friday 9th January – Classic Sprint

Saturday 10th January – 10/15km Freestyle individual start

Sunday 11th January – 15/30km Skiathlon

Across the Atlantic Jessica Yeaton, Paul Kovacs, Casey Wright, Kat Paul and Mark Pollock will continue racing in the US Cross Country Skiing Championships. The events left on their calendar are:

Thursday 8th January (Fri 9th Aus time) – 5/10/20/30km Classic Mass start

Saturday 10th January (Sun 11th Aus time) – Skate Sprint

Meanwhile Esther Bottomley will be bucking the trend by heading to Liberec in the Czech Republic to race in their World Loppet event the Jizerska Padesatka. This weekend of racing involves a 25km and a 50km mass start classic event. This will be the first time in Esther’s career that she will race the Jizerska Padesatka which as well as being a World Loppet event is also a FIS marathon Cup.
