2015 World Junior/U23 Championship

The 2015 World Junior / U23 Championship is set to take place from February 2-8 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Selected to the Australian Team are junior athletes Xanthea Dewez and Katerina Paul, and U23 athletes Nick Mongomery and Mark Pollock. The team arrived in Almaty on Friday after a pre-camp with team leader and coach Allison McArdle in Ramsau, Austria.

“I’m really excited about the upcoming competitions,” said McArdle via email from Almaty. “We had a great training camp in Ramsau, the athletes are all healthy and seem to be coming into race form at the right time.”

While Dewez, Montgomery and Pollock have all competed at World Junior Championships before (Montgomery also at the 2014 U23 Championship), this will be Paul’s debut at this level of competition. Both Dewez and Paul are looking forward to the opening Classic Sprint competition, while Montgomery and Pollock are focussing more on the distance competitions later in the week. The first race was to have been the junior sprint on Monday February 2. However, now both the junior and U23 sprints will be on Tuesday to allow the race organisers more time to work on the course and extend the sprint loop.

Almaty is one of two cities still with their hat in the ring for the 2022 Winter Olympics, along with Beijing, China. They are already the host city for the 2017 World Universiade Winter Games and a candidate for the 2019 FIS World Championship. The former capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty is a city of around one million inhabitants in the south-east of the country very close to the borders with China and Kyrgyzstan.

The events can be followed live via FIS timing and will also be broadcast on Eurosport, though possibly not on Eurosport Australia.
