Skike Australia Victorian Ski Chase – Event 5 report

Unfortunately the fifth event of the Skike Australia Victorian Ski Chase, the Bullfight Charge (Sunday 24th July) had to be cancelled due to insufficient snow.   However, an unofficial fun event was scheduled in its place.  Thanks to Alan Eason from the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, who recognised that many of the Lake Mountain trails can offer great skiing on as little as 10 cm of snow, the unoffical event was able to be held.  It was an unconventional course beginning at the machine shed (only 50 m from the car park) and finished with a lightning descent of Royston road.  Many thanks to Alan and helpers for making this happen.  In keeping with previously held unofficial replacement events, all participants will be awarded 50 ski chase points.

The next event is the Pub to Pub (also known as the Hotham to Dinner Plain) just under two weeks away (Saturday 6 August).  Race start 11am, 12 km, Freestyle technique.   This is one of the most popular races on the calendar, run by Mick Sinclair.  Keep an eye on Mick’s website for condition reports, and pre-race day entry details: http://www.dbstrategies.com.au/pubtopub/

Ski Orienteering at Perisher

As part of NSW XC Week the 2016 NSW Ski-O Championships will be held at Perisher Valley on Sunday 7th August, organised by Big Foot, Perisher X Country and BushFlyers. Anyone who skis or orienteers (or both or even neither) is welcome to come and have a crack.

Ski orienteering is big in Scandinavia and various parts of Europe and North America, but August 7th at Perisher is the only opportunity to give it a try in Australia this winter. For skiers planning to race the Australian 5/10km Championship or the Boonoona Open, here’s an opportunity to do 2-3 events on the same day and get full value from one trip to the snow. More information and online registration is available via the Big Foot website.

Vic Junior Report & Video Link

It was a great weekend of racing at Falls Creek for the Victorian Junior Championships. Around 70 athletes contested the classic sprint on Saturday and the freestyle distance events on Sunday. Perfect weather conditions and great tracks saw some great skiing and close racing.

Official Results

In the classic sprint the older age class was won by Stella Ajani and Tom Hoogenraad although both finals were hotly contested. Age class victories went to Fedele de Campo and Maysen Duffy in the U16, Tommy Silvester and Lily Murnane in the U14, and Emma Prest and Jayden Spring in the U12.

There was some close racing on Sunday in perfectly prepared skating trails both the 5km and 10km events were hotly contest with the lead groups staying in touch for most of the race. The winners for the categories were U10 Annika Benne-Keeble & Isaac Spring, U12 Gabrielle Baines & Jayden Spring, U14 Lily Murnane & Tommy Silvester, U16 Maysen Duffy & Fedele de Campo, U18 Lilly Boland & Jarrah Forrer and U20 Stella Ajani.

In addition to the official timing, BNSC tested out a new timing system in preparation for the Hoppet in August. A novel feature of this system is that a video of either the start or the finish is linked to every participant. Waxing For Victorian Juniors

Attention coaches, athletes and parents preparing for the Victorian Junior Championship at Falls Creek this weekend July 16/17.

You may have seen the SSAXC low-fluor waxing protocol that was published on this site earlier this week, which is designed to level the playing field and reduce costs for lower levels of competition.

While all coaches contacted have expressed support for this protocol in principle, there have been some requests for coaches to have more time to discuss the protocol with parents and athletes in order to explain the reasoning behind it. For this reason, race organisers and the Victorian Junior Squad manager/coaches have determined that this waxing protocol will not apply for the Victorian Championship this weekend. Individuals can choose to wax no-fluor, low-fluor or high-fluor as they see fit. Notwithstanding this decision, because of the new snow and cold conditions forecast for Friday night, it is expected that the snow will be relative dry and high-fluor waxes will likely not provide much of an advantage anyway.

For the ACT/NSW junior championship at Perisher this weekend, it is expected that all participants will follow the low-fluor waxing protocol as information has been available all season at the Perisher Nordic Shelter and has been distributed to the ACT/NSW squads.

If there are any questions regarding the SSAXC waxing protocol they can be directed to:

Skike Australia Victorian Ski Chase – Events 3 and 4

This weekend the third and fourth of the Skike Australia Victorian Ski Chase events, the Snow, Trek & Travel High Plains Tour, and the YMCA Howmans Gap Victorian Relay Championships took place.  Many thanks to the Howmans Gap Allstars for all their hard work putting on another great weekend of races.

After a wet week we were lucky to get an overnight freeze, and some great racing conditions for Saturday, with over 100 participants.  On Sunday the weather turned, and only a small number of teams braved the fog and light rain.

The interim results can be found here, Ski Chase Interim Results 13July2016_men Ski Chase Interim Results 13July2016_women, which include only those people who had registered by Sunday 10th of July.  More names will be added to the results as additional people register.

Note, all participants in the relays earned 50 points.  However, only the best two Falls Creek events count in the points tally.

In the women’s competition Kat Paul has taken first place, with Ann Bellingham only two points behind in second place, and Lily Boland in third.  Briana Oldis and Ella Jackson have dropped a few places to 4th and 5th place.  In the Men’s competition there has been no change in the top two places with Kevin Tory and Will Middlemiss still in 1st and 2nd.  Nick Montgomery has jumped to 3rd, Mark Pollock is holding 4th, and by registering during the week Bob Cranage has taken over 5th place from Rod Clutterbuck.

The next event is the Bullfight Charge at Lake Mountain on Sunday 24 July.  Race start 11am, 8/3.5 km (Freestyle technique).  If you are pondering which distance to ski, remember the longer distances earn more points.

2016 Low-Fluor Waxing Protocol

At the Ski & Snowboard Australia Cross Country Committee (SSAXC) meeting earlier this year it was agreed to adopt a Low-Fluoro Wax Protocol for club and state level competitions.

The aims of this protocol are to:

  • Create a level playing field and fair competitions that demonstrate the skiing ability of participants.
  • Reduce time spent waxing so more focus can be put on preparing for competition.
  • Reduce the cost to athletes, parents and teams to compete in XC Skiing.
  • Minimise potential health risks from high-fluor waxing with poor ventilation.

In summary SSAXC encourages all participants only to use no-fluor or low-fluor waxes for these competitions. Further details are available in the linked PDF: SSAXC Low-Fluoro Waxing Protocol 2016
