AUS-NZ Cup Wrap-Up 2016

The 2016 FIS Australia-New Zealand Continental Cup series concluded at the Snow Farm in New Zealand last weekend. US Ski Team athletes dominated the final events of the series, winning all six races, while Australian skiers Katerina Paul and Phillip Bellingham took out the overall series titles. Aimee Watson was the sole Australian to make the podium in an individual event at the Snow Farm, taking third place in the final 5km Freestyle.

2016 FIS Australia / New Zealand Continental Cup Winner – Katerina Paul

The overall ANC winner Kat Paul had her best day in the Classic Sprint at the Snow Farm on Friday September 9, qualifying 5th then finishing 6th in the A-final up against a strong US field including three regular World Cup sprint finalists. Ida Sargent  (USA) won the A-final ahead of Jessie Diggins (USA) and Sophie Caldwell (USA). The men’s sprint final was won by Andrew Newell (USA) ahead of Jun-Ho Hwang (KOR) and Ben Saxton (USA).

The Mass Start Classic races on Saturday September 10 saw US skiers take all podium places after some exciting pack racing. Jessie Diggins won the women’s 10km ahead of Ida Sargent and Sophie Caldwell, while Andrew Newell won again this time ahead of Ben Saxton and Noah Hoffman.

In the Interval Start Freestyle races on Sunday September 11 new faces topped the podium, with Liz Stephens (USA) winning the 5km ahead of Chae-Won Lee (KOR), and Aimee Watson putting in her best race of the series to take thrid. Simi Hamilton (USA) won the 10km Freestyle ahead of Yong-Jin Cho and Jun-Ho Hwang
