Paddy Pallin Junior moved to July 9

The Paddy Pallin Junior cross country ski race at Perisher originally scheduled for Saturday July 1 has been moved to Sunday July 9 due to the current lack of snow. The planned race start is 9:30am, so it fits in before the Cooma Clean out the Waxbox classic race at 11:00am.

The Paddy Pallin Junior has been a Perisher Valley event for many years with records suggesting this is the 59th year. It is one of the OLDEST cross country ski events in Australia and it’s just for the YOUNGEST skiers. It’s a fun ski race (no prizes for first, second and third) where everyone gets a certificate!  You can ski in it if you are only two years old or over fifteen, as long as you were under 16 years at 31 December 2016. The distance you ski depends on your age and snow conditions. The older skiers (14/15 year olds) ski up to 5 kilometres, while the younger skiers (3/4 year olds) ski only a few hundred metres.

After the race there will be the usual festivities – fruit drinks, hot dogs and spot prizes – which will be held in or around the Sverre Kaaten Nordic Shelter.  When that’s over, there’ll be fun and games, including an on skis jelly snake hunt! Entry is on the day, and there’s no charge. Just turn up to register and pick up your bib at the Nordic Shelter in time to start the race.

AUSXC Cocktail Night – October 7

It is just over two weeks until the annual AUSXC Cocktail Night in Melbourne on Friday October 7. The evening doubles as a celebration of Australian cross country ski racing for 2016 and a fundraiser for Australian athletes heading overseas to represent their country in international competition. Combined with other fundraising activities under the XC Towards 2018 banner, nearly $30,000 was raised towards athletes expenses in the 2015/2016 season.

Tickets for the evening are available via the Trybooking website. Drinks and finger food are provided, and National Team athletes are already hard at work collecting items for the silent and live auctions held on the night and putting together audio/visual material (not to mention training for the competitions).

AUSXC Cocktail Night Save the Date 2016

On Friday October 7 the Australian Cross Country Ski Team will once again be hosting an end-of-season Cocktail Night in Melbourne. The evening is a great opportunity for athletes, coaches, officials, parents, relatives, general skiing enthusiasts, and random drop-ins to discuss and celebrate 2016 while looking forward to 2017. The event also doubles as a major fundraiser for the XC Towards 2018 project with silent and loud auctions, in 2015 raising around $10k towards athlete expenses at World Cup and World Junior/U23 Championships.

More details about the event and the online registration will be distributed mid-September. Anyone interested in donating auction items should contact

Rocky Valley Rush is Classic

The Rocky Valley Rush and Sun Valley Ramble will be held this Sunday August 14 at Falls Creek. Race organisers BNSC would like to bring to the attention of participants that the races will be held in Classic technique, as indicated on the online entry page, as there was an error on an earlier version of the AUSXC race calendar.

Entries can be made online, or also on the day between 8:30 and 9:00am (with a $10 late fee). The Falls Creek groomers have worked hard over the past week to get the Sun Valley loop open again and the current plan is to run the course on a reverse Joey Hoppet loop.

Ski de Femme will also be hosted by BNSC at Falls Creek on Saturday August 13, registration for the free skating and classic technique clinics for women is available via Eventbrite.

Ski Orienteering at Perisher

As part of NSW XC Week the 2016 NSW Ski-O Championships will be held at Perisher Valley on Sunday 7th August, organised by Big Foot, Perisher X Country and BushFlyers. Anyone who skis or orienteers (or both or even neither) is welcome to come and have a crack.

Ski orienteering is big in Scandinavia and various parts of Europe and North America, but August 7th at Perisher is the only opportunity to give it a try in Australia this winter. For skiers planning to race the Australian 5/10km Championship or the Boonoona Open, here’s an opportunity to do 2-3 events on the same day and get full value from one trip to the snow. More information and online registration is available via the Big Foot website.
